CATSS Spring Research Day 2025
The 2025 CATSS Spring Research Day took place on Friday, April 25th, once again at Walter Library. This year, the internal keynote speaker was Dr. Linda McLoon, CATSS PI, UMN Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences and Associate Director of the Medical Science Training Program. Dr. McLoon's talk, entitled "Strabismus and Nystagmus: Potential Approaches for Developing New Treatments" discussed childhood onset strabismus, infantile nystagmus, both disorders frequent treatment failures, and a different approach to treatment for the future.
This year's external keynote speaker was Dr. Robert Froemke, NYU School of Medicine Professor of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Skirball Professor of Genetics in the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Dr. Froemke's talk, entitled "Love, Death, and Cochlear Implants" discussed the importance of neuroplasticity for learning the meaning of different sounds. He described his work with rodents, new mother mice learning to care for pups, as well as deafened rats learning to use cochlear implants to hear again.
Between the keynote talks, we once again hosted a poster session allowing CATSS members to present their own research to conference attendees. Poster presenters included postdocs, graduate students, medical school students and staff members.
